Solid and reliable units.
For me, this brand has always been very good and is incredibly easy to set up. These units are very low power and make no noise at all really. The only noisy thing could be that you put in hard disks that are physically making noise. In terms of value for money I think you get what you pay for and these are quality devices that have long life expectancy and long-term updates. In regards to how functional they are they do loads of extra features that a lot of other NAS boxes don’t give you, the software is really well written and is really well kept up-to-date. The only thing that I would say isn’t kept up-to-date very well as the CCTV package. I have about 20 of these devices across my businesses and I’ve been using them since about 2013. I think for the most part they have about eight years where they are updated continuously with new features from when they are new.

Great Item And A Must
This is an excellent item. Don't be put off by so many reviews stating the DS225+ only uses its own Hard drives and one stars. You pay more but they are guaranteed to be better and work with the unit. The prices are odd on all sites where you can pay a lot more for this model or the 2024 or the 2023 model but I paid just over 400.00 (brand new)for the unit and a 4TB hdd. Don't be put off by complexity. If you have a mobile phone or a desktop you could probably do with one of these to replace your `cloud' info being put on someone elses computer and vulnerable to things like `Crowdstrike' or the very recent DNS outage. First things first. Any new hard drive needs to be tested upon receipt. Connecting the hdd is very simple. Then as soon as you turn the unit on it will begin testing the hard drive. This will take 12 hours for a 4TB drive. Leave the box on and turn off the PC - no problem. Just follow the prompts once you turn it on. You don't need much I.T. knowledge but you will learn a few things. Maybe you have a USB drive you want to copy to your new HDD. Connect your USB HDD to the front of your unit and press a button. It bleeps and begins copying. You will also find `USB COPY` package once you have installed the default packages. This system comes with lots of applications and if you can work a mobile phone you can work this. I have stated with a single SATA HDD , I could add a 8TB later and run raid at 4+4 but I will probably re-use the 4TB drive for my windows desktop and buy 2 8TB hard drives so that one drive backs up the other. Quiet - yes - you can run this 24/7 and not notice - you can set it at various speeds from the apps but it runs cool. The pictures make the box big but its small and fits anywhere. There is a good lenght of power adapter so it could fit on a high shelf. The Cat5 cables are not to long. Note that there is a reset button on the box. All you need is some paper and a pen to write down the username and pwd of your local site that you will create and if you want to logon from anywhere another user and pwd. I have worked in a proffessional I.T. dept in the past and built file server's in the form of the box and the Linux Samba server software so its nice to find something so simple. Just make a note of your IP address in your browser when you set it up and dont be put off by "insecure connection" messages. This is a very secure setup. I think anyone is capable of getting this up and running. Tip - :at every stage make a windows `snip` screen capture . There's a lot to remember when taken through the setup process. Default 3 year warranty. What they don't know - google A.I. will - great for a quick answer.

Works fine with non Synology drives now (since DSM 7.3)
I've not really used it yet - just migrating my data (which takes ages from my old 220J!) but I thought I'd let people know that the warning about requiring Synology drives is no longer true. Synology had so many complaints that they relaxed that requirement with DSM 7.3. You do get a warning that the drive isn't on some sort of recommended list but that's all. I had read about this before purchasing. On another similar point, Synology say the maximum RAM chip you can add is 4GB but I put 8GB in there and it was fine. It's showing 10GB now (there's 2GB built in). Do a Google for the subject. I made sure it was the right kind. I suspect it's just that Synology only tested up to 4GB.

First NAS
Expensive compared to competition but it’s for a reason to have the established software. Amazon as always is very competitive when it comes to pricing of these items.

Only Synology drives compatible with this NAS
I bought this as it was a revised edition of the ds224+ however disk compatibility is different. This has stricter controls and only accepts Synology drives. The Seagate Ironwolf drives compatible with ds224+ do not work so be aware. Quite bitty to set up all the software requirements but generally loaded ok. Having a few issues setting up a backup drive. It is taking days to transfer all files from my pc to the NAS and keeps timing out. Should be better if I get to the end. I think I am using a cat 5e cable so might try and upgrade this.

Easy to setup and use
Very easy to setup. Great performance if you have the right network. I have WiFi6 and it’s plugged into one of the mesh nodes.

Frustration
I’ve spent several hours attempting to set up the cloud on this to link iPhone and iPad. I was able to set it up to Time Machine my Mac quite easily. However the frustration in not being able to use it as a cloud server in the way I understood it would, has made me decide to return it.
