Q: Will this help me out-run a hurricane?

Yes. If you diligently monitor the weather bands and local radio it gives you plenty of notice to leave before the hurricane arrives. Be sure to heed local authorities evacuation instructions.

Q: Is anyone else having trouble receiving *any* weather band channels?

It is all dependent upon location. I can receive two different NOAA signals very well here. There are times when I can receive two others faintly. NOAA claims 95% coverage of the Continental US with a signal range of 40 miles from each transmitter. You could be in the 5% that is not covered. The transmitters also do go down sometimes due to storms, power outages or upgrades.
