Rice play with this toy is one of my granddaughters favorite activities! By all means, use water or rice or sand :)

Doesn't matter. This toy is useless!!

Q: Does anyone know if this might work with small pea gravel?

It would most likely work, but it will probably bounce all over the place as well.

Q: Would this work with kinetic sand?

No, I barely works with regular sand and especially when wet. Overall, not impressed w this toy and mostly used it for water though my toddler quickly lost interest in it
