Q: Does is need a pre-amp - where does it get its power from?

The unit is self contained for power. The receiver has a built in rechargeable battery (li-ion with a usb charging cord) and the hand held unit needs two AA batteries. It does not need power from anywhere else. Make sure your receiver is fully charged before using session using a standard usb charger, then ensure you have AA batteries on hand in case the ones you have run down.
