Yeap. I bought it for my cannon and even if I'm using the battery grip it does work.

Q: Does the mounting plate screw have a D-ring for screwing on without a flat-head tool? Also,can the base clamp accommodate a 40mm-wide Arca type plate?

Yes, the mounting plate screw has a D-ring for screwing, and it can accommodate Arca Swiss Type plate which is around 38.5mm
