ROBUST PIECE OF KIT
The story:I’ve been looking for a descent pestle and mortar for ages; something that had been used, so was perusing online auctions. The majority of mortars I found were small, 3-4” high and not that much more across. When I did find something size wise, it was extraordinarily expensive. Invariably it was something used by apothecaries from days gone by, which meant it was made to last (and has) and the asking price was set accordingly. So I turned to Amazon to see what was available. And Voila! The Soligt 12” Sauerkraut Pounder... You’re obviously puzzled at my decision I know...I came to the conclusion that as I can’t find exactly what I am looking for at a price I am willing to pay, that the quest should be viewed from a different perspective; I have many sturdy substantial bowls which could fit the bill, so all I really require is a descent size pestle ÜThe product:A 12” solid and substantial, ergonomically crafted piece of equipment in beech wood, which sits in the hand comfortably and will come in handy when I start fermenting; so will have a dual purpose in my kitchen. It is heavy enough to use as a pestle, which is the main reason I purchased it; having two different sized ends it is practical too.The verdict:Excellent for crushing wet aromatics (garlic, ginger etc) and spices that require a little crushing after dry toasting, without difficulty...And no doubt packing ferments when I get around to it; at a cost of £11.99 it is money well spent and very Highly Recommended.

Excellent pounder
Single piece of solid beech—not 3 sections glued together like another brand I almost purchased as the wood was aesthetically more pleasant. Pounded a batch of cabbage for sauerkraut for 10 minutes with good effect and a modicum of effort. Good weight and balance. What is more important is the angle of the pounding surfaces, which are appropriate for grabbing bits on the sides of the pickling jar and pushing them down, unlike, for example, my Vitamix equivalent, which is too rounded, although designed with a different purpose in mind. Recommended.
