So many buttons and DIALS!
Since I got my first Nikon N90 (Late 80's film camera) I have been buying the Magic Lantern Guide for each new camera that I buy. There is just so much capability built into these new cameras that you in order to be able to take advantage of all that capability you have to have a well written manual. The Magic lantern Guides are not just a cut and dried "here it is and this is what it does." These books contain enough humor to make the reading easy and some good informed opinion on the usage of the various features that goes beyond just the how to. This is money well spent!

Where is COLOR???
It feels strange to read an article about White Balance with references to pictures while the pictures in the book are all in Black&White! What are we supposed to see in those B&W pictures?I think the book is OK: you can get some useful tips and get more understanding of the camera's logic and the logic of the author's preferences.Generally, I would recommend the book, but I would also recommend to the author to change the publisher, otherwise the book's articles look very silly when they are accompanied by B&W pictures. I give 3 stars to the book because of the poor publishing judgment.

The better owner's manual
This is not my first Magic Lantern book. It is an in depth owner's manual plus a little more.

Wish the Pictures were in Color
I recently purchased a Nikon D300 and a D700 and needed reference books. I purchased the RockyNook book Mastering the Nikon D300 and thought it was a better reference. This one for the D700 is OK but I was a little disappointed that all the pictures are B&W and the descriptions reference color pictures, so is a bit confusing at times. The quick reference card is a nice feature. I think I will buy the Mastering the Nikon D700 by Darrell Young when it is released later this Spring.

Nikon D700 Guide
The Nikon D700 is a complex camera with more features than I have ever experienced in a camera. I want to maximize the use of every feature and this guide is a good adjunct to the owners manual. A must have for a new D700 user... :-) Will help you to get the most out of your Nikon D700!Good Shooting!!KMW

Nikon D700
This is an excellent introduction to the Nikon D700. If you already know the D300 well, there is not as much necessary information. Still, it was helpful for me.

Magic Lantern D700
doen't contain specifics for motion shots, dark setting shots, flash, and focus options. It is no better than the owner's manual.

Many insights into how the camera works
As has been mentioned, all the photographic examples are B+W are not brilliantly reproduced but apart from that, this book gives insights how the technologies used work together to make the sum of the D700 greater than the parts.Nikon's Creative Lighting System gets a chapter but this subject alone needs a book to itself to cover comprehensively. I found the chapter "Exposure and the AF System" particularly useful, it covers Nikon's Scene Recognition System which one easily forgets about because it doesn't have such a catchy name such as Face Recognition. This chapter has many tips on how to use the varying autofocus options.Although I can't compare this book to other D700 ones, it has proved to be most insightful with much information & tips not found in the instruction manual & is certainly more digestible! My imprssion that the D700 is an amazing camera & one I'm likely to be using for many years to come has been reinforced my Simon's excellent guide.

Might be very valuable for you.
If you bought a second hand D700 and it didn't come with a manual, I'd recommend you don't buy one, buy this instead. If your D700 came with a manual this book won't tell you much more than the manual did, read the manual and save your money. Now, if you want to know EVERY detail of HOW your D700 performs the magic it does then this is the book for you. Detailed, in depth descriptions but, in general, you won't need them to use the camera and to get the best from it.In short, it's a GREAT book if you don't have a manual and you'll read it.

Useful complement to the user manual. Clear explanations and easy to dive in and out of. Good quality product as are others in the series.
