Q: A few questions.. 1. Do birds actually use this? 2. Is it refillable? 3. What is measurement of the grid openings?

They did at my house. I live in South Mississippi. I have a lot of hummingbirds who will nest here for a while each year. I hung this near a feeder in May and watched to see if it would be used. I have seen birds land on it and pull little pieces out on three separate occasions. If I managed to see it that many times I imagine that it's been used a lot. I'll put one out every year from now on.

Q: What is the nesting material provided?

I see other coarse plant materials besides cotton. I found that the regular spun cotton is quite difficult for hummers to pull apartwithout me pulling and fluffing it first, so this product is ideal for the hummers. I was concern that hummers would not build nests nearby because other birds (and even squirrels) also gather this materials for nesting. This is what I do: I take out 1/2 of the materials, tie it with tie wraps, and suspend it with a thing metal wire solely for hummer to use because they are the only ones that can hover to collect the material.

it comes with nesting material as well as the cage

Q: what time of year do you use this? I live in Washington state.

I usually go on line and check the sites that show data on hummingbird migration. Typically they can arrive in my area ... Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada ... in late April to mid May. Therefore, I try to have mine out and accessible by the third week of April.
