Nice accessory. Instructions are missing a key detail.
I thought at first that either these might not work for me at all or perhaps I might need a firmware update (which I did eventually find seems to be available from their website). However, when I watched the instruction video for installing the update, I realized there was a step that I hadn't seen mentioned in the instruction booklet or the product listing: In addition to the sequence listed being to connect the back paddles to the controller, then the USB cable to the back paddles, and then turn on the controller, the video says you first need to go into the settings for the controller and set it to connect over USB instead of bluetooth. Once I did that, the back paddles (and a button swap I forgot I had done) started functioning as I had previously programmed them - apparently the programming had been working, but because the controller was presumably still working over bluetooth, the signals weren't going through the back paddle unit where they could be modified, nor were the paddles able to send control signals by themselves. With that resolved, the paddles are working without any need to upgrade their firmware from the version mine shipped with. The only other issue with them is that for my hand size, it's difficult to hold the controller (or to pick it up by the handles; I should probably get in the habit of picking it up by the middle to avoid this) without my fingers resting on the back paddles, which means that just picking up the controller or holding it too tightly might cause unintended inputs. On the other hand, that also means the paddles are easy to reach and click. The paddle operation feels very mouse-button-like and doesn't have much resistance. I suspect that for most people who would purchase these, that would be a mostly positive set of characteristics, but it still seems like useful information to potential buyers, especially with larger hands. In particular, folding my middle fingers back or down out of the way of the paddles feels infeasible; I think the way to go is going to be to have them rest above the upper paddles. For similar reasons, they might be more comfortable for someone who keeps index fingers on the shoulder buttons and middle fingers on the triggers and would use these with their ring fingers, because the different hand angle makes it easier not to apply accidental pressure.

Doesn't work with Bluetooth Headphones
My fault for not reading/understanding what I was buying, so this is more of a warning. In order to use these paddles, you need to go into your settings and switch the controller settings from Bluetooth, to wired with USB. Then you play with your controller plugged into the console. Ended up going with a Sony brand that had the paddles built in. Should have done that first and saved me this purchase that is now unnecessary. If you need to use headphones for sound, this is not these paddles are not for you.
