Q: does the seat adjust can you sit on the seat

The seat does adjust in height. It's not really for sitting on though. You put a knee on the cushion and scoot with the good leg. I did use it to sit on for a short time while waiting for someone to pick me up, for example, however that is an unsteady option that I would advise against.

Q: how does this work in small spaces... ie getting in and out of small bathroom.... I live in carpeted apartment - good on carpet?

The turning radius is really good, but depending on the space in the bathroom, it may be difficult to manuever. The handle bars are narrow enough for tight spaces. If the sink sticks out a bit the handle bars may bump it. I used the scooter on hardwood floors, cement, and asphalt. It scoots very smoothly. As for carpet, I don't think it will be a problem unless its extremely thick carpet.

Yes, it does. Just may want to consider your mom getting comfortable prior to surgery or using the brake before she actually needs to. My mom was scared for a bit to go down hill, she also has a slight slope on the driveway. But the brakes work good once she got a little more comfortable with the scooter it was no problem.

I used it for 6 weeks after foot surgery. It is reasonably stable, but I would keep 2 hands on the steering wheel, because is you go around the corner sometimes it will stick a little if you are on carpet. That's why there is a basket so that you can take a phone, bottled water etc. with you. I would not ride the thing with a cup of coffee in my hand. I had people for that, but if you don't put it in a travel cup and in the basket.
