Collins English School Dictionary (Paperback)

If you so wish to improve your vocabulary and spelling well, this is a nice sizable dictionary to start with as it is easy, not too heavy to carry around on a daily basis and doesn’t take up that much room and has all the necessary words to get you started.

Boyght for lockdown schooling my 8 year old, and into secondary school. Easy for him to use, simple enough to understand, but not patronising or overly simplistic. So far every word he's needed has been in it. Nice touches: nice easy pronunciation guides, unlike adult dictionaries which use weird symbols which a child would just ignore; good sections on grammar and punctuation; useful tips on commonly confused words. I'm glad I chose this dictionary, and can see him using it well into secondary school.

A lot of words but an interesting read.

Size and weight is good, perfect for school bags, will last years to come. Good value for money and quality of the pages is good too.

かつていい辞書とはとにかく収録されている語彙の量が大事だった。わからない単語が出てきて辞書を調べたのになんと「単語が載っていない」となると辞書としての役割をちゃんと果たしてもらえてないような気がする。 しかし、電子辞書の登場とともに衰退が始まった紙の辞書はスマホの登場とともに壊滅状態になっていると言っても過言ではない。 「検索」という機能だけで考えるとどうしても紙の辞書はスマホより使いづらい。いちいち単語を引くのは面倒な作業だ。 しかし、スマホのアプリが便利であってもやはりわからない単語が出てくるたびに検索するのは面倒だ。いっそのこと、辞書をまる暗記してみてはどうだ？と思ったりする。 どの外国語もそうだが、結局は外国語は語彙力だと思う。文法は短期間に集中してマスターできるかもしれないが、単語はそうはいかない。辞書に載っている単語を覚えてしまえば、本を読むときのもどかしさもだいぶ減らせるのではないかと思い、最近辞書を「検索用」ではなく「読み物」として読んでいる。 ただ、この「読み物」としていい辞書は従来よいとされていた辞書ではなく、あまり簡単すぎる単語はなるべく排除して、たくさんの用法がある単語は重要な用法だけを簡単にまとめた辞書のほうが個人的にはいい。今までOxford Word PowerやLongman Active Studyなどコンパクトな辞書に何回もチャレンジーしたがやはり冠詞のaやabout, aboveなどのような基本的な見出し語の説明が細かすぎて数ページであきらめてしまったケースが多かったが、このCollins English School Dictionaryは文字のサイズも大きく、語釈も簡単にまとめられていて、非常に読みやすい。aやaboveのような基本語彙の説明もとても簡潔にまとまっていて、ほかの辞書と比べて飽きずに読み進めていける。 発音記号がないことやbe toとかcannot but …ingやmay wellのような熟語が載っていないのはちょっと残念ではあるがそれでも「読み物としての辞書」としては非常に優れていると思う。

Mini diccionario para búsquedas rápidas, trae una buena cantidad de palabras para su tamaño, letras legibles gracias a una tipología clara, bien organizado y con varios apuntes esparcidos a lo largo del libro… De forma genérica trae las definiciones básicas y en algunos casos se incluye otras definiciones más concretas y el origen de la palabra. En muy pocos casos se incluye una especie de ayuda a la pronunciación, aunque no se utiliza el alfabeto fonográfico ni tampoco una forma académica. También se incluye en los casos que corresponda, la forma en plural, el gerundio y el participio de los verbos y las formas comparativas y superlativas de los adjetivos. Exclusivamente para las personas que necesitan un diccionario de dimensiones reducidas, apenas 10,5 x 15 cm y 4 cm. de espesor, donde se incluye mucha información en poco espacio, quizás el mejor del mercado en este tamaño, a un coste aceptable…
