This will work for both. I use it on my windows 10 box without issues. You may need to hunt for a driver though. Not sure if win7 will pick it up automatically.

I think you will find that cable is only for data transfer. There should be another connection on the camcorder to charge the battery internally. Some camcorders use only an external charger, no plugin on the unit. Usually you can download the camcorder user manual online. Hope that helps.

my cable is 6' (72") tip to tip. Worked real well to transfer 40 old videos from sony digital camera to a computer for copying. The only thing that was a bit odd was the end that plugged into the computer was harder to plug in than I would have thought, I thought I was pushing too hard then I tried a little more and it seated fine.

Q: will this work with a canon zr80 camcorder and download to a pre thunderbolt imac desktop

Not 100% sure but I think it will work. I used it with a JVC Camcorder to connect to a 2011 MacBook Pro with FireWire. I used iMpvie to import the video.
