It has to be a powered subwoofer as the sub output is just an unpowered 3.5mm out only. Also works to feed an amplifier to connect additional speakers.

Q: Is the line out variable with the volume? Or is it fixed output?

It's variable. I have the 3.5mm to split RCAs to my two subwoofers. They increase in volume with the speaker outs.
