A convenient and useful gadget, but handle with care
I used the gadget to steam some Bok Choi (Chinese cabbage). I steamed it for 10-15 minutes and it came out fine, despite the steam leakage from the sides of the lid. I also steamed broccoli and it was cooked in 5-10 minutes. A third item I steamed was dhokla mix. I put the mix in small foil containers and put the containers with the mix in the steam compartment. It came out very well -- light and fluffy. I steamed dhokla mix in a pressure cooker also and found that there was no difference -- dhokla made in this steamer was as good as dhokla steamed in a pressure cooker without the weight on top.I have found the gadget to be convenient and useful. So much for the positives. Now for the negatives. The lid is made of glass, is susceptible to breakage. So you have to handle it with care. Also, you have to make sure that there is water in the lower chamber. Otherwise, the sandwich bottom may get overheated and fall apart. The sandwich bottom, in fact, looks thin and katcha, in contrast to the rest of the product which has a heavy-duty stainless steel look. After the first usage itself, the bottom got discoloured. After a few uses, the insides got discoloured slightly. It does not seem like it is made of stainless steel. We also don't know if the stuff it is made of is safe for steaming veggies. When the gadget is on the flame, the metal parts can get heated up and you have to take care that you don't touch it with your bare hands. Though hollow, the handles do get heated up and can hurt you if you do not take precautions.Make sure you don't touch the gadget when it is hot and also, be careful not to get scalded by the steam coming out. Put off the flame first and then open the lid with baking gloves on your hands -- or protect your hands with a piece of cloth. The handles are attached to the body in what seems like a flimsy way. It looks like the handles could come off at some stage, particularly if you do not handle with care. This remains to be seen. Will update my review accordingly. There is a 24 month manufacturer's warranty, but to avail of it, you have to bear the postal costs of returning the item to the manufacturer and also, the postal cost of having the replacement sent to you. The postage charges may amount to more than the cost of the item itself. So, If something happens -- for instance if the glass lid breaks or the handles come off, you will have to trash the item because it won't be worth your while to follow up with the manufacturer. However, if the handles haven't come off, then, even if the glass lid breaks, you can still use the item as a top-less cooking utensil. If the lid and the handles both break, then you can still use the gadget for growing moong-sprouts. On a lighter note, if the material it is made of is not food-grade, then maybe you will die of food-poisoning -- in which you won't need the item any more.P.S. The photo of the gadget on Amazon.in is of some other model which seems to have two steaming chambers in place of just one. The product that I am reviewing here has only one steamer compartment. It has one container for the water and another steaming compartment

Five-star performance, BUT... zero-star worth
Steam formation starts swiftly, steam-leakage is minimal, handles remain cool thru-out.But from a BRAND NAME steamer costing 1500 INR we expect something more !Like aesthetics, safety, convenience, life... which are completely missing.* Handles aren't horizontal, not even symmetrical, blind persons would do a neater job.* The spot-welds do not look consistent, they will fail some day causing injury or burns.* Both vessels are flimsy thin. Atleast top vessel should be thicker to resist dents & warpage.* Lid knob is more cylindrical than knobby. It is bound to slip & break some day.* The 24cm Vinod steamer lid will NOT fit 24cm Vinod Kadhai and vice-versa.* Steamer handles are ABOVE water-level and could have been riveted. OTOH, rivets in a kadhai get in the way of stirring and washing, so spot-welds are preferred. But Vinod designers are from pakistan.
