Thicker Than Ice: A Sailing Family Finds Their Place at the Edge

A deeply captivating journal of a family sailing through the northwest passage
Few sailing vessels attempt to cross the northwest passage, fewer still complete it. This journal is an enthralling, and honest account of one family taking on this challenge. Those that have read Orca will enjoy the new adventures in this book. John writes in a very matter of fact style, the drama not needing anything more to captivate the reader. I’ve enjoyed reading this book greatly and feel I have shared in both the sadness and joy experienced by this incredible family.

Good read!
It’s a great story about a great voyage across the top of the Americas. The Northwest Passage remains a barely attainable dream even today considering the unpredictability of ice movements, climate change, arctic fires, fog and icebergs. The young family on this unlikely passage become an Arctic sea crew on an adventure vessel rescued and re-loved by her owners. The author sure has a sharp sense of humour in the face of seemingly impossible odds, but the tension and emotions involved in such a monumental task with a toddler onboard are palpable for every mile gained west, and for every page you turn. Now on to Orca, looking forward to John’s first book!I am a retired world sailor myself and I think this is a very special family which I hope to meet one day.

I came across this book after watching the full 29 minute YouTube video where it was mentioned by Dean at the end. I'm so glad I took a shot on it, what an incredible story that you'll just have to read for yourself. John has a great writing style and knows how to keep you turning the pages, I literally couldn't stop! After his prior book 'Orca' arrives next week I'll be eagerly waiting for the next Pennington book to drop. Maybe in the meantime I'll try my hand at some lake sailing too. Thanks John, Kara and Dean for sharing the adventure! Three cheers for the Senteijn!

Amazing heartfelt adventure!
Just finished reading Thicker Than Ice. I enjoyed every moment! So few boats have made this passage, I feel so appreciative that you brought us along through the words of your story. Dean is a very lucky kid. I loved the video with his narration! I’m going to buy your other book, Orca, now, and will continue to follow you and your friends! I enjoyed this so much, thank you again.
