Q: Is there a way to store the lid when collapsed?

Yes; When you received it, before you removed the wrapping, that is how it goes back together again. On the inside of the lid you will see (four one inch long latches that are close together). The side that is opposite of where the handle is; there is a rectangle hole in it. THAT is the square used to latch the lid to (open or closed. I hope this help; God Bless.
