Nima Starter Kit, Gluten Sensor with Test Capsule

I have celiac disease and this unit does a pretty good job to check for gluten. I purchased this right from the manufacturer, while it seems to work well enough there are some caveats with it as well, the biggest of which is price. The unit itself charges quickly and lasts quite some time. The test (tubes for lack of a better term) hold a pea sized amount of food to test. They company claimed a short period for the test, I would say that it was greater than 5 minutes. They also suggested putting multiple samples together such as a little of everything on your plate, but if one of those had gluten there wouldn’t be anyway to deferenciate which one had gluten that way, not to mention if you decide on an appetizer or desert. It would be fairly easy to eclipse the cost of your meal with testing supplies at $6 per test. The lack of FDA approval is disappointing, you may be able to use money from a health savings account, but insurance will not help. I truly believe that there is a reason there is not FDA approval, wether it’s profit driven or they have a program to get you new testing products after 3 errors (this is a object of content with me as now your food is cold your out at least $6 and it has to happen 2 more times to get anything back). When the company approached me to give a review, I shared and they chose not to post it after criticizing the fact that I mentioned cost several times in the review. If you have celiac you know it is not cheap to begin with, let alone adding testing supplies. I feel like it’s a must have for a celiac for a trip where bringing your own food is impossible, but in no way is this affordable or practical for daily use. If it where to gain FDA approval and become more affordable, I would happily recommend, but as it seems it’s in its infancy and according to their site they have no intention of getting FDA approval (later on maybe according to their site) and can’t possibly recommend unless you travel a lot or have some disposable income.

I can't believe it works just as advertised, honestly I feel that it's nothing sort of a miracle. When a person I love gets sick from gluten there is no amount of money I wouldn't pay to take away their pain and now we can pre-empt it all together. What's most surprising to me when I test things that are marked "gluten-free" and they come back positive!! It completely confirms for me the utility and necessity of the product. If anyone you know if gluten-free I feel like this is one thing you shouldn't live without.

The Nima sensor has seriously been such an amazing addition to our lives!!!! My daughter (aged 6) has Celiac disease and it has been so great to be able to test food and liquid to make sure they are safe for her to eat and drink!! It has benefited us in two ways. One it has let her eat items that I wasn’t sure were gluten free or not and that I would have said “no” to before. Second it has saved us many times from giving her something to eat that actually had gluten in it even though it was supposed to be “gluten free”. It’s small and easily portable and fits in my purse! Quick to test the food too! We use it for eating out, traveling/vacations and testing food we eat regularly at home. It is seriously a game changer!! I give it 5 stars and would recommend it in a heartbeat!

This is a good tool to have in your gluten-free eating arsenal. The Nima Sensor should always be used in conjunction with discussion about the food you are eating and preparation protocol if you have any questions. When using the capsules, make sure to turn them until they are completely closed. Also, put the tester down on a flat surface when testing to avoid capsule error. Follow the directions of the tool carefully and contact customer service if you have any questions. They are very responsive!User note: The Nima Sensor should never replace having a conversation with whoever is preparing your food. It is still up to you to be diligent about your food's ingredients, preparation, handling, etc. so the Nima is a good tool to have but not your only safeguard to a gluten-free meal.I received this product as a gift from the company for a trip to Asia in return for providing my honest and unbiased review. I just purchased my second Nima purchase and I absolutely love it! I have celiac disease and travel and eat out a lot. I have been glutened several times but since purchasing this sensor, I haven’t experienced it. Whenever I am in doubt I test my food with my sensor. It’s portable and easy to travel with, keep in a purse or bag. I love my Nima and it’s a must for anyone with Celiac!

I have celiac disease and this device is amazing. I limit my eating out because of the severity. However, I travel a lot for work and am often unable to bring enough food with me or go grocery shopping every trip. This has saved me four times while traveling.When eating out, I select restaurants that have high ratings for handling celiac and allergies. I always have a dialog about my condition and let them know I have the tester. I went to one restaurant that was very knowledgeable and even had robust safety protocols in place, but the tester detected gluten. This saved me not only physically but monetarily as I didn’t have to pay for the meal. Gluten poisoning is horrible normally without compounding it when traveling.To the inventors of the sensor, I am eternally grateful to you!

I am so thankful for Nima! I can now eat out without any hesitation and worry of getting sick! In the past, I have been very clear with waitresses and waiters about my allergy to gluten, but they can only do so much. Now with the Nima, eating out has become such a treat again and I am so thankful and relieved! Being young and living in a city and not being able to enjoy the variety of great foods in town was such a bummer until now! The app is also very helpful in picking new restaurants and using the Nima community’s recommendations to be confident in trying new places. Thank you Nima for letting me enjoy eating at restaurants again!
