OH MY GOD, YOU GUYS , THIS BOOK IS A-DO-RA-BLE đ Remember how we grew up listening to fairytales about princesses and their Prince Charmings? Or the Beast and his Beauty? đ As an adult Iâd say somewhere along the way, I traded glass slippers for Evie and her evil overlord. We have a broody, grumpy, terrible at feeling and exhibiting normal human emotions (Tatianaâs words, not mine), but only soft for her Evil Overload nicknamed âThe Villainâ. And then we have the sunshiny, witty & âStop getting attached to your bossâ Evie Sage whoâs his assistant. đŒđ Trust me when I say this, the âheâs DOWN BADâ trope in here is TOP TIER. đ©đ The found family is chaotic AF, but I would still sell my soul if it meant I could be part of them.đ„° Thereâs: đ„ An ogre in the kitchen who makes pastries đ A healer who somehow always has one accessory in pink đ A dragon trainer whoâs a shameless flirt and a dragon (wait till you hear what they named him) đ An uptight, rule-following Humans and Magical Creatures Resource Manager đ A 10-year-old working on her new novel called [Insert The Villainâs Name] and the Lost Princess.đž And then thereâs Kingsley â a frog with a crown and sign boards. đžđ Heâs the cutest little munchkin ever đ My heart is so freaking happy đđ I love these characters SO MUCH. Youâre gonna fall in love with The Villain and Evie from page one. The slow burn, the banter, the humor, the little things â everything is so wholesome and done so freaking well. âšđ„ Highly, highly recommend if youâre looking for a fun time with some of the most loveable characters youâll ever meet. đ«

I could not put this down! I absolutely love everything about this book, it had so much comedic charm that itâs impossible not to devour it in one sitting. The Writing : Quite fluent and easy to get into. If I had one critique it would be that the context flow is a bit choppy; one scene we encounter an issue and then itâs left in the dust only to resurface chapters later out of the blue and resolve. The Plot : so many twists and turns, where you think youâve guessed it to only find yourself more lost than the Villain without his Assistant. The only lacklustre part of the plot was the magic. The author never truly delved into it, leaving a lot of questions about how the magic system actually works in this world. Especially regarding the Villain. We are explained that he holds dangerous magic, but itâs not clear how or why the magic he has is portrayed as such. Considering it was a major plot point throughout the story, I wouldâve liked to have seen more in depth world building. However, the first season of Disenchantment, Netflixâs animated tv series, reads a lot like this novel. The use of satire for heinous actions and absurd circumstances is used to lighten what would otherwise be a dark and serious tale into a comedy. While some people may have found this too nonsensical for their tastes, I found it refreshing to read a fantasy more spoof than serious. I wonder if like Disenchantment, where the first season lacked overall depth and character development but deepened considerably with every season after, this author will follow suit with her tale. There is much potential to see little plot holes fill up with Book 2 in that sense. The plot twist was well fleshed out, and the obvious foreshadowing in the beginning that I overlooked as backstory became prevalent after the reveal. The Dialogue : wildly entertaining, each characterâs delivery is executed so well and with such humour. Some people have commented they wanted to have more bizarre characters, and I agree. The missing piece was the w.t.f. character that was so absurd it left us reeling. We have the brooding villain, the klutzy assistant, the stoic office snob, the bumbling animal lover, and the gossipy healer, what what we lacked was a total wild card to tie everything together. Since Iâve already juxtaposed it, Big Joe, Jerry, and Old Man Touchy characters from Disenchantment are the sort that would give dialogue to elevate the story. The Romance : I have never been more invested in a relationship with a man that decapitates his enemies and a girl who wise cracks him every hack of the way. I also enjoyed how it started off surface level with physical attraction âmy boss is so hot *googly eyes*â to then evolve into a relationship of interdependence and trust. It was a very grumpyxsunshine romance. If you had any qualms about picking up this novel, this review aims to eliminate them. Despite the flaws I point out, this is my new favourite book. One that I snorted out loud at, that made me feel like a giddy little girl inside, that I pretty much devoured in 3.5 hours straight. From the characters who are filled with intrigue and humour, to the setting which plants you directly in a skewed fairytale, to the overall voice of this author, I really enjoyed this book. It just is such a fun adventure to dip into. For this authorâs first debut novel, she slayed it. I want this tale picked up as a TV show, animated or not, it would be spectacular to see it play out on screen. I will say, however, Kingsley style, that this author is EVILđž for ending her cliffhanger the way she did. But I digress, as it does make me that much more excited to see what unfolds in Book 2. 4.9 stars.
