Q: Do the pieces have that ikea , formaldhyde smell

No, they have the Ikea meatballs and mashed potatoes odor. It's a great desk. No funky smell.

3 boxes. One for each separate piece. IE cabinet drawer and both L panels

Yes this a set and all pieces have to be there for it work.

Q: Are the desks attached to the cabinet? Can the desks be further separated to rest on the edge of the cabinet, to extend the overall length?

They rest on top of the cabinet. You can move them around. For example, if you wanted an L shape or if you want space in between. But, be careful because it will compromise the sturdiness of the desks. They could swing left and right easier if you do not place an adhesive underneath - I used 3M adhesive strips and that worked.
