The blade is not hammered at all, its just straight steel. I could have purchased an identical knife at the local Asian market for less than $10. Review: Too light and shorter than 7" cutting length. - Rather light. The 7" length is from the top of the blade back. So because of the angle of the front of the blade and the space at the back of the blade, the cutting length is under 6 1/2".

Wonderful Quality Knife
Love this knife, great quality, and high carbon stainless steel, you just can't beat it for the price. I still haven't needed to sharpen it!
