Wonderfully entertaining winter adventure - with no story!
It's all in the sound effects - the only words being sounds, those of crunching snow and sledging.A bear watches the boy leave his lovely red sledge outside his hut in the snow. What WILL he do with it??? And who else wants in on the fun?I saw this recommended on a children's book list. I opened it to read to my son without filling through first, which really was a little silly, as each page only has sounds to vocalise (crinch crunch CRINCH CRUNCH), which look simple. But they convey distance, volume and action as a boy moves to his hut carrying his sledge. It's very clever, and the more input the reader gives it the better, there's a lot left unsaid. We enjoyed it many times, and it's a perfect time of year to have this to hand (writing this in February). Lots of fun to read, and because it's so simple, accessible for very young children.

Beautiful book! The illustrations "speak" so there is not much need for text. The text consists mostly of sounds: the crunching of snow underfoot; the sounds of glee as a myriad of creatures go flying down the snow topped hills on a little red sled! The story is about a silly fun filled romp as creature upon creature pile on for the joyous sled ride! Through her wonderful illustrations, Lita Judge captures the spirit of a moonlit winter night and the unadulterated joy of the woodland animals who sneak a ride on the "red sled"! Reading this book aloud to a child or silently by yourself will illicit sheer joy!

The illustrations in this book will melt your heart and keep any little one reading, but the story itself is so funny. It is a little tricky to figure out, and my grandson and I went over it a couple of times before he really got it, but that is part of the value of the book. Children need stories that hold their attention and then make them think. The moment when he realized that he knew the bear had used the sled but the little child in the book didn't know it was rewarding for him. It was an important moment in his process as a reader - learning about point of view in a book. I marvel at the cleverness of authors of children's books!

Wordless book
This is a great wordless book which encourages the youngest child to tell the story from the pictures and find the surprise at the end. Beautiful illustrations. Paper has a wonderfully soft feel to it.

Red Sled is a Delight!
Red Sled is a delight! Lita Judge's new book blends a joyful tale with art bouncing with life. Judge has the rare ability to capture the essence of real animals and fill them with humor, expression and fanciful actions. Her animals reach into our hearts as did Beatrix Potter with Peter Rabbit.Lita Judge's words are begging to be shared out loud, "Scrunch scrinch scrunch scrinch ....." We hear the story while we watch it happening. Little children will enjoy the book by themselves, but, best of all, is the delight it will bring to all ages when they share the book and enjoy the fabulous story of a shared red sled.

This book arrived in great condition. I am using it with my 3rd graders in a literacy station where the kids write the characters' thoughts on post-it notes. Great illustrations and good for teaching onomatopoeias.
