Horror film based on the 1978 'video nasty' shocker of the same name. Sarah Butler stars as Jennifer, a writer who retreats to a cabin in the woods to begin work on her new book. While there, she is brutally raped by a group of local men whom she encountered en route to the cabin. The attack escalates and Jennifer only narrowly escapes with her life - but survive she does, and returns to the locale to carry out the most gruesome revenge on her attackers that she can possibly devise.

Wow! Now THIS is what I call revenge!
Really brutal revenge films are like therapy for me. I can lose myself and for the sake of just a couple of hours, dream and fantasize that THIS is what happens in real-life to scum who get pleasure out of making other people suffer. Oh how I wish it were true...but at least I can always go back to this film when real-world atrocities make me seethe inside. A-B repeat is a really magical little tool isn't it?!!Problem is, most films fall WAY too short when it comes to payback. The only films I can recall even coming CLOSE to satisfying my blood-lust, were "The Hills Have Eyes" (remake), "Rambo" (2008) and "The Devil's Rejects". This film however, DELIVERS THE GOODS.I know to some people I sound a little nuts, but all my rage comes from a very deep EMPATHY. I'm someone who refuses to read newspapers or watch the news because anytime I hear of a murder or rape, I literally seethe with rage, for the families of victims, boyfriends, girlfriends etc etc....unfortunately empathy is an emotion that's seemingly lost on today's "justice" system, which would rather protect a criminals "rights" than put themselves in the shoes of a victim, and the suffering which they and their families go through.Anyway, I better stop there as I'm starting to get wound-up just typing, and this is a movie review after all.Everything about the production was spot-on. The cast were all excellent in what must of been very difficult roles to play (Sarah Butler was outstanding), the score was tense and creepy and the pacing was fantastic...I particularly loved how the acts of revenge were so drawn-out and calculated for maximum suffering...each guy got the same treatment back in VERY satisfying ways. This trumps the original for me...quite easily if I'm honest. I don't say that disrespectfully, as I'm a fan of that movie and obviously it's contribution to the history of horror cinema is legendary (I also reviewed it a while back). It's just this version is so damn good, not just because of the severity of the revenge either. Structurally the plot is more focused and "together"...with a little more emphasis on character development, especially in the case of the villains. The subtle changes to the story are welcome and make the piece as a whole more cohesive than the original...not to mention the performances are all stellar, while the original was kind of "hit or miss" in that department. I don't compare them visually of course, because the original was made decades ago and on a much smaller budget, while the remake has obviously had a fair bit of dough thrown at it. It shows as well, it looks fantastic. I'm usually quite traditional and have been known to scoff when I hear the term "remake", but I'll tell you what, both this and "The Evil Dead" have proved that with the right group of people behind them, they can be unbelievably good!!So yeah, if you're someone like me who wants to escape from this retched world where criminals have "human rights" (for INHUMAN ACTIONS), then this is definitely a film for you. You have to sit through a lot of mistreatment of our poor Jennifer, but trust me, it pays off!

Great Film
I've seen this film many times before and after purchasing this Blu-Ray.Writer Jennifer Hills, takes a break away from the city, to a cabin in the woods to start her new book, Visits a gas station on her way to the cabin, looking for directions and has a little fall out with the guy that works at the gas station causing his friends to laugh at him. At night he and his friends set out to teach Jennifer a lesson by breaking into her cabin to scare her. However, it starts out to be a terrifying act of Humiliation and Intimidation but quickly turns into a night of physical abuse. Before they mange to kill Jennifer, she jumps into a river and manages to escape without being seen by any of them. Later, she picks them off one by one, causing them to face a slow and painful death, feeling the pain she went through on the night they broke in and both physically & mentally tortured her.Great film, Recommended to Horror fans. 5 Stars.

Interesting, but a slows starter
I really enjoyed this, but only after the first hour. It was a bit slow with the majority about a gang rape, but when the main character comes back for revenge, the film then gets interesting! So what I thought was dragging and boring suddenly turned into a gripping film for a gore, blood loving fan.

A simple masterpiece remade
I have seen both the original of this film, and I have seen the remake, and I will say that I believe, with no disrespect to the original, the remake I think is better. The front of the cover of the original says that 'this woman has just brutally killed and mutilated four men beyond recognition, but no jury in America would convict her', but in the original, she doesn't quite go that far, mutilate them I mean. The killings are brutal, yes, but they were that bad. In the remake however, they are and it makes for much more horrific fun!Sarah Butler is brilliant in the lead this time and the revenge killings are very clever and brilliantly executed. No mercy and plenty of imagination, I think this is no hold barred cinematic horror at its best. The original was supposed to be a shocking piece of violent exploitation, but as Joel Schumacher said, everything in cinema is exploitational to an extent, but it argued, was it exploitation cinema or just a simple masterpiece? Given how long it's lasted and the fact it is seen as a classic even now, I think it's justified in being called a simple masterpiece. Revenge in films is always controversial and violent, but it also happens to be great cinema. I simply think this is a great remake and will last even longer.

Never upset the fairer sex!
The subject matter is pretty grim but once you get past the violent prolonged rape of the lead character the real fun begins. She puts the vile b'stards through the mill.A good remake, I thought the film flows much easier than the original, it was really slow going in parts but this remake keeps the pace right till the end.As I said earlier not a pleasant subject but if you know what you are in for I think you will appreciate this film as I think enjoy would mean you're sitting on the wrong side of a jail cell.

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978)
This film was the first of four releases with the same title, but this first dvd version has poor varying levels of sound quality. One minute I'm turning the sound UP to hear what is being spoken, only to turn the sound back DOWN as being deafened by motor-boat engine revving up etc..Speech at times sounded hollow (like being in an empty room) even when spoken dialogue was outdoors.Picture quality resemble a VHS tape recording, and had not been enhanced or cleaned-up in any way.The first film release starred Camille Keaton, the second and fourth version's starred Sarah Butler, with the third version starring Jemma DallengerThis 1978 version gave the option of German or English speaking dialogue, and no subtitles options.
