No, the batteries are strictly blanks with internal wiring to carry the current from the transformer. If you unplug it, there is no power to the device.

Yes, that is exactly how it works. I wasn't clear either, I thought I might need to attach the wire to the other batteries, but you do not need to do that. Just the one with the cable and 2 blanks. It works great for me right now, and mine had 3 AA too, so same scenario.

Q: Can this replace a 4AA battery system?

Doubtful. 4 AA batteries produce 6 V (1.5 x 4). The power supply on this is only 4.5 V. You're going to get from this what you would with four very nearly dead AA batteries.

You can't adjust the voltage. I can't find it but I answered a question about this before and then it was fresh in my mind and I think I covered everything. But here goes, I think it is designed for items with 3 bats thus working on 4.5 volts. It works OK on items that require two bats as it is then overpowering it but the items that need 4 batts(pretty rare) don't work as well as they are underpowered.
