The belt does not attach to the chair. It goes accords the waist of the person and then the straps go through the little opening on each side of the chair around to the back of the chair. The end of the straps them to attach to itself and is adjustable to be as tight or loose as you want it.

This belt is just shy of 20 inches across on the padded part. It fits across the entire mid section of my dad, we use it a lot and it is quite useful. When clipped it has a lot of room for adjustment as well. Unless the person has a very large mid section, it would work very well.
