THE FIRST NEW HORROR CREATURE Before he turned his hand to lycanthropes in An American Werewolf in London, shuffling zombies in the Thriller music video and hostile extra-terrestrials in Men in Black, special effects legend Rick Baker lent his talents to the creation of another memorable horror creature. Step forward, The Incredible Melting Man! When spacecraft Scorpio V returns to Earth following a mission to Saturn, two of the crew are dead and the third, astronaut Steve West, is in a critical condition. Critical, that is, until he rises from his hospital bed to bite chunks out of a nurse before escaping into the surrounding countryside. The authorities set about trying to track Steve down before he claims any other victims, but they don t know the really bad news yet - Steve is also highly radioactive! The Incredible Melting Man offers up a wealth of show-stopping B-movie moments in its relatively modest running time chief among them, the scene in which a disembodied head floats down a river only to smash messily on the rocks further downstream but the real star of the show here is Baker s ultra-icky special effects work which let you see the Melting Man s transition in all its gooey, glistening glory. SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS Magnificent! You've never seen anything until you've seen The Incredible Melting Man --DVD Talk Rick Baker's make- up work is outstanding --Blu-ray.com Baker s work is, as ever, exemplary and West s deterioration looks both realistic and grotesque in the extreme --Mysterious Universe Review: Bad movie gets luxury treatment - This is a favourite of mine from the 70's and the first AA picture ( 15 now) I saw when I was actually 13. Scared me witless at the time, but now I can appreciate it for the badly acted, poorly scripted B movie mess that it is. HD sure does give movies a new lease of life, and this looks stunning even for a cheap exploitation film of the 70's. Great colour and really vibrant detail that leaps off the screen, and really catches your eye. I'll forgive the terrible music and awful fashions, and enjoy this for what it is, a fun slice of monster mayhem, with some truly revolting ahead of their time makeup effects that do convince you this guy is slowly melting away. This is region A blu-ray so in the UK you will need a multi-region player to see it. Vital if you love this kind of film, as they won't be putting this sort of thing out in region B for a long time, if ever. "..ANOTHER AMAZING ARROW RELEASE OF A CLASSIC.."
This certainly is one bizarre horror/sci-fi movie from 1977 but what a cool movie it is. The story starts with a group of astronauts on a mission to Saturn but something goes wrong which we never see or are explained, but the ship returns with only one man alive and in critical condition in hospital, he soon escapes which starts a man hunt to find him, he's not only dangerously high in radiation but his body is beginning to melt away and parts are dropping off! The movie certainly is incredibly gross with amazing effects and gore and ooze and blood everywhere he goes, the make-up effects are top notch for the time, this is one cult classic B-movie horror/sci-fi that's a must have if your a big fan of these weird and crazy movies of the 70's and 80's, Arrow films have again done a top notch job! Blu-ray has a great picture quality for such an old movie. Cool features as usual, trailers, interviews, commentary and original super 8 version of the movie! Region B, 86mins, 1977. Reversible sleeve art and booklet.

Rubbish, but in the so bad it's brilliant category of rubbish. I personally loved every minute and had wanted to see this since I was a kid.

The Melting Unknown
Steve West(Alex Rebar), the only survivor from an ill fated space mission to the Rings Of Saturn, wakes up in a hospital bed, rips off his bandages and yto his horror finds his skin to be melting. Soon an animal instinct takes over and the now decaying Steve goes on a murderous rampage through the countryside feeding on human flesh to survive. He is pursued by his old friend Dr. Ted Nelson(Burr DeBenning) who still harbours ideas to save his ailing friend. This is a late 70's film, with a 1950's vibe. Although it has added gore, courtesy of Rick Baker's fine special effects and make-up, it owes quite a lot to the Science Fiction B-Movies of the 1950's, especially British entries into the genre such as The Quatermass Experiment and The First Man Into Space. Unfortunately, 'The Incredible Melting Man' isn't so incredible after all. There is a lot of padding that fleshes out the films relatively short running time, and although its low budget is partially hidden by the fact that most of the story takes place at night, it does show itself in some pretty horrendous acting, especially from the wooden DeBenning who sleepwalks through his role. It is also quite difficult to feel sympathy for Steve, as unlike Victor Caroon in The Quatermass Experiment, the afflicted astronaut is hidden under Baker's terrific gloopy make-up for the entire film. An interesting angle of a military cover up is tackled then discarded, and even the scenes where Steve attacks various people are lacking in much tension. There are a couple of moments of humour, such as when Ted and the Sherriff discover that the mysterious body part they have been gawping at is a turkey leg, and the journey of the severed head down river, but for the most part this film plays it dead straight. Still, despite its many faults, as a lover of B-movie horror and Sci-Fi, I have to say that I did quite enjoy the whole cheesy spectacle. A sequel 'The Amazing Puddle' was touted but it didn't get off the ground. It's hard to judge the picture quality of this Italian release as mentioned before most of the story takes place at night. Audio was fine if a little muffled in places. No extras to speak of. 3 out of 5

Putrid in all senses
Astronaut returns from space, starts melting and heads off into a murderous rampage around the countryside, pursued by a doctor with a Geiger counter and a military general. Apart from a couple of domestic interludes between doctor and wife, that’s virtually the whole plot. Pretty cheapskate? It is, with the biggest part of the movie’s budget presumably afforded to the gross special effects by the acclaimed Rick Baker. A throwback to the ‘50s “B” movies, it’s almost a remake of the equally low priced though superior “First Man In Space” (conjuring up personal memories when it double featured with “High School Confidential”). This one quickly becomes monotonous assisted by an uninspired screenplay and wooden performances though, breaking the dullness briefly, there’s a cameo by exploitation queen Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith. Arrow Video gives the movie its usual high-quality presentation as a BluRay/DVD combo with a superior transfer and several Special Features, though it seems rather wasted on such a putrid movie.
