Q: What's the deal with the 2-part lid? Does one have an opening for sipping?

No, there is no opening for sipping. The second part (plastic) has a pressure release valve (rubber) between it and the top metal screw top. I can only guess that it releases pressure from the hot insides to the upper cap. Might be handy if you take it on an airplane or if you're a mountain climber. Germans designed it, so I'm sure they had a good reason. I started to send it back because you couldn't sip from it, but it makes a great small leak proof thermos.

Forget about smooth and comfortable, its look like very cheap quality product.

Q: Can you put in the top rack of dishwasher? I have 4 kids and won't buy anything I cant put in dishwasher.

No. It can't go in the dishwasher. Honestly, I won't put any of these insulated travel mugs in the DW ( and I have 5 kids ) even if it says you can. I have found they start to leak after I do that.

If a vendor says don't put it in a dishwasher, why would you want to risk it? Cup cleans with warm soapy water.
