Q: Will this use standard hook and loop sanding discs made for sanding wood?

Highly unlikely. The hook-and-loop on these discs is courser than the Velcro on a typical wood sanding disc. These are intended to be used with non-woven pads, which are essentially like "scotch-brite" pads. The course hook-and-loop grabs the non-woven mesh directly, there is no "Velcro" on the back of non-woven disc.
