Q: What is the "metal shell" made of?

The metal shell made of anodized aluminum. It’s almost the most thermally conductive metal, and safer than painted steel and will NOT rust.

Q: I have two parakeets in one cage. Do I need to buy 2 heaters?

I personally would if I couldn't keep the cages "warm" overnight. Because they are pretty small. If your birds like to sleep scrunched together, maybe you could do corners? So that the heaters are placed at kind of 90-degree angles, so to speak, close together?

Q: How far away does this project heat? I am looking for an alternate solution for heating my reptiles basking spot that is about 8 inches from the roof

definitely no! It provides low heat that birds have to snuggle up to very close.
