Q: Has anyone ever taken their horn on a plane with this case? If so, did it work well?

I took my horn with me in this case on a trip to Brazil. It worked very well. There was no connection in between flights so j am not sure what the situation would be like if there were any connection flights in between. In all, the hirn went and came back without a single dent. The case itself looks so good that it does not look that it had travelled all these hours.

Q: what are the dimensions of the front pocket? can it hold a 13 in by 9 in music book?

There are 2 pockets - one is about 17"x 6" , the other 14" x 7" (give or take on both). So no, can't hold a music book. The larger pocket is as big as the whole case on the hard shell side where the back pack strap go (so naturally you'd want flat items in there if you were using the backpack feature) and the longer skinnier pocket expands a bit more and is on the softer side of the case (it also has the insert for pencils, reeds, etc). You could probably put the small music used for marching band in the pocket or folded papers in the long pocket - that's about it.
