Q: Based on actual use, how sensitive is it? I need one for finding small gauge staples in wood (<1" thick) before running it through my equipment.

Hi Im a woodworker too and thats what I bought it for It works very well better than some that are more expensive And being longer it covers more ground Id say it will do what you want Im very pleased and great price too

only if they are at the surface or pretty close to it.

Q: What is the range of the wand? Do I need to be within 2 inches of it or will it detect from a foot away as well?

If the metal object is heavy metal it can scan it from a foot away but generally it must be near the body

Q: I am looking to purchase a hand held metal detector for my bouncers to scan customers for any weapons is this a useful product for that?

I use it to scan for nails in wood and it picks them and small staples in the wood.
