Megan is an all-American girl. A cheerleader. She has a boyfriend. But Megan doesn't like kissing her boyfriend very much. And she's pretty touchy with her cheerleader friends. Her conservative parents worry that she must be a lesbian and send her off to "sexual redirection" school, where she must, with other lesbians and gays learn how to be straight. Review: A True Classic - This movie has been a favorite of mine ever since I first discovered it as a middle schooler in the early naughts. It wasn't the first bit of queer cinema I had the pleasure of discovering, nor the second, but it def. has its place as one of the things I watched in that heady adolescent stage of knowing who I was but not quite being ready to let the world know. All these years later in my thirties, and of those early movies that helped me through that chapter of my life it is absolutely my favorite. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen it. I mean truly, what's not to love? It's hilarious, super camp, full of beyond iconic lines, the set and costume design is out of this world, the cinematography serves every shot perfectly and the cast is simply unbelievable. Review: changing the culture - Having enjoyed the movie, I was impressed by how poinant and insightful the story line accurately portrayed the Fundamentaists in their misguided belief that human sexual identity can be "re-tooled" and forced on people, espceially our youth, because "they" believe that their god deems it as wrong. Actually, I was bothered by how judgemental, accusatory and condescending some parents were as they "dis-owned" and gave-up on their children because of their children's gender issues. The discreet use of situation appropriate humor took the "edge" off in many serious situations and that made the experience even more profound. I felt great compassion and empathy for the main character because of her sense of being "forced" into disingeneous feelings that caused her to question her own sanity and place in life. Her "friend" was also great in her role, as well. I greatly enjoyed the happy ending and found it refreshing to see that some people can accept people for "whom and where" they are in Life and by seeing the Good in all people, irrespective of one's rigid and too tightly wound religious mandates. The god of the old testament may reign for the Fundamentalist and they may see the rest of us all burning in hell, but for now, I chose to believe that the Almighty Ineffable LOVES everyone, in spite of "their" mis-intrepretation of their bible. The story line also reminded me that in America, Captialism "rules" and that if a dollar can be made, some opportunistic "agency" will create a modality to invent a venue that provides a service. "BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER" was a wonderful movie that everyone should see, especially if they have children. The topical & timely issues were handled with care, sensitivy and professionalism & I highly recommend this movie!

Fun Fluff
But I'm a Cheerleader is a bit of fun fluff. The cast is excellent. The subject matter, unfortunately, is still topical--maybe even more so today than it was 20 years ago. Our country seemed to have made great progress in LGBT rights until the recent setbacks.

A whimsica,l fun ride
(Some spoilers but nothing you can’t find out in the first 15-20 minutes) It’s a colorful (literally, everything is blue and pink) and comical love story about a popular girl (with terrible friends btw) who gets sent to a reformation camp to get the gay out of ya. Spoiler lol it doesn’t work. This movie is hilarious. Megan, is played by Natasha Lyone (anybody remember Slums of Beverly Hills), a cheerleader in a major sense of denial about her sexuality. It isn’t until she’s sent away, to straighten her out, that she starts to come to terms with it. There she meets Graham (Clea Duvall), who’s long since come to terms with her sexuality but her parents have threatened to cut her off if she comes home queer. How will they get through this warped reality they’ve stepped into and not lose each other in the process. It’s a fun movie worth multiple viewings. It’s one of my favorites.

This film is amazing! You sit agaped in front of your TV, for everything is so exaggerated, you'd think it's impossible - it's simply brilliant! And the love-scene between Megan and Graham is shooted so wonderfully and intimately that you really think you'd feel what the two of them feel - oh, I just think I will watch it again now :D So, this film is going to make you laugh and cry at the same time for it's stuffed with so much fake and trash and with a amount of clichés. So just: WATCH IT! It will make you feel gay and light again, even if you are depressed as hell ;)

Excellent film, idéal pour passer un bon moment détente, très caricatural. Uniquement en VO.

The over the top nature of it make it a very obvious parody of the "pray the gay away" gay conversion therapy culture. A risky move for the film makers, but the way that it's done makes the comedy work really well. The comedy works really well because you're laughing at how ludicrous the system is. It's also a lovely romance film which is such a rare novelty in a world where any lesbian films are aimed primarily at the straight males voyeuristic gaze! This doesn't do that. It instead legitimises the two main characters love for each other without any connotations of a straight mans fantasy, as well as the relationships between the other male and female characters. The way that it's done also makes a fine job of showing that you can't "pray the gay away"'and that you can't change who you are- and that you bloody well shouldn't have to because there's nothing wrong with being gay or bi! Natasha Lyonne is superb! In other roles, she's been very streetwise with an externally strong sense of self. In this, however, she's very naive and very easily influenced by others. So it shows how versatile her acting skills are. Well done to everyone involved in the making of this film! It's one of my all time favourites!
