Q: How can I train my dog to not go for the handles or sides?

I’m not a dog trainer. But I started by putting dog in sit, then holding the pad right in front of him. Then I give the “get it” command, and if he hits center then we play tug for about 3 seconds… then I let him have the toy for the win. If he hits the handle or side then there is zero play zero fun zero reward.

If your dog likes it as a reward. Then yes. Your reward for a good job can be a fun game of high praise and a tug of war with he or she winning in the end. Just don't let them keep it for prolonged periods. Just quick fun reward then done.

Q: Can this be used as a sleeve??

This one comes with a handle and can only be used with both hands, not like the sleeve. The tearing competition is much more interactive.
