Q: Is the material soft or itchy?

It is quite soft. I use the sofa in an office setting and my clients comment that it is soft. It is a bit firm and the arms are rather hard but the material itself is soft.

Q: Is the seat depth really only 19inches from pillow to end of seat? Seems so narrow..

This is such an awesome couch!!!!!!! Really isn't narrow. I have this in my living room with two big couches. Looks great. Feels great. Everything is great about. I prefer death couch over the leather couches we have. I forbade my children to use that one it's only mine :-)

Q: Do the covers come off the cushions so you can clean them?

no...you can't even flip them over...so the first thing I did sprayed them with fabric protector
