how big are the individual blocks?

They are about 1.5" by 1.5", but come in a sheet that contains 12 squares.  You break off two at a time, easily and use one or two depending on how much charcoal you have.  One is usually enough to start the grill.  Two works if you want to get more charcoal burning more rapidly.

Question 2

are these similar to the Big Green Egg brand in that they don't have any chemicals or things that would affect the flavor or operation of the BGE?

I use them 100% of the time to in my Big Green Egg.  They do a great job lighting old charcoal and new.  I use 3 of them in my large green egg and it takes about 15 minutes from start to nice solid even glowing heat from the charcoal.  Once I close the top I leave everything wide open and it heats up to over 500 degrees in about 2-5 minutes.  At that point I can sear fish, steaks, pork chops, anything.  I usually put the vented top on the grill once it  gets to around 500 degrees (sometimes 400 degrees), then I wait until it gets down to  around 350 degrees before I  burp it and open it for putting the food on.  Once the food is on I take off the top again and don't put it back on until it hits either 400 degrees (fish) or 500 degrees (steak) at which point I put the  vented cover back on and it goes back down to around 350 degrees and eventually to around 300 degrees.  It cooks fish and steak in about 5 minutes per side.  I have found I can cook perfect salmon (dry rubbed with dizzy dust or Big Green Egg Dizzy mix) by placing the fish on the hot grill skin side up.  When the fish can be turned over easily (i.e., the fish has released from the grill), it is done on that side, then I put it skin side down for 5 minutes and when I take it off the grill the skin pretty much comes off by itself and the salmon is cooked thru but is still nice and juicy.  My steaks are renowned for being the best (nice smoky taste and cooked perfectly with a slight pinkness in the middle).   Hope this helps.  I have heard several other use just 2 of the squares but I like to do it by thirds so the full grill is hot the same all over.

What are the chemical ingredients?

They are basically compressed wood & paper chips in wax. Safe & easy to use. Same product as  Green Egg lighter starters much reduced price.

Question 4

My co-worker's husband  is not so hot lighting his open fireplace. Is this better than Fat Wood for him do you think?

My husband and I just had this discussion as it is time to start using the fireplace.  Both are very good at starting quickly but we think the Fire Starter squares are quicker, and burn a tad hotter.  We decided to order only the squares when we finish up with the fat wood as they cost about the same as well.
