No, it does not have a timer on the cassette player. Also, the audio quality has a high treble and if you did record, you have a high omni-directional surface noise. The best feature is with the memory stick USB Port where you can listen to the audio material through the cassette player.

The audio cassette recorder records in mono.

Mine doesn't have this problem. In my experience eating tape is usually because it's not seated properly and the head will misalign and grab the tape. Also, aging, wear and thinning of the tape can cause this to happen.
