Went to open the garage door and it sounded like a bucket of marbles in a cement mixer inside an echo chamber. Not exactly the soothing sound you want when leaving for work.After a bit of detective work (and some dramatic sighing), I traced the problem to this little gem, the screw drive coupler.Ordered a pack thinking I’d need backups, but turns out this thing is solid.Installed it a couple of months ago (disassembly was the painful part), and it’s been running smooth ever since. No more grinding, no more garage-door death rattle. Feels like I replaced chaos with peace and quiet. Highly recommend. May not look like much, but it shut up my garage, made the door actually work, and that’s worth five stars right there.

This part works well with our garage door, and delivery is fast! However, I ordered 4 and only arrived 2. Might be Amazon warehouse's mistake, but it was disappointing.

As I backed out of the garage, I heard a “plink” on my car’s roof. When I got back home, the garage door wouldn’t open. I found mysterious broken black plastic pieces on the ground. I could hear the motor running, when I pressed the button. I know NOTHING about garage doors. I googled the name of the door - a Craftsman that is probably 40 years old - and a pictures of this black cylinder, the coupler - came up, which I recognized as the source of my black pieces. I found a video on youtube about how to install it, and it seemed doable, even for this middle aged lady.. Just a couple of bolts, swing the housing back far enough to cram the new coupler in, and reattach the drive screw to the motor. I did mess it up at first by not aligning the motor with where the door was. Before re-coupling, you have to study what direction the drive screw turns to bring the door to its current position. Manually turn the drive screw and watch what direction the carriage moves. Then realign the carriage with the trolley. Then e,g. if your door is down, and the drive screw turns clockwise to bring the door down, press the remote and let the motor turn all the way clockwise until it stops. THEN re-couple. It felt so satisfying to repair. My local repairman doesn’t even service the drive screw kind anymore. I am optimistic this thing will work another 40 years with the 4 couplers I got here!
