Q: Can i cast from bbc sounds?

On IOS it becomes one of the AirPlay devices in your list. In theory every app can access it. I use it for BBC Sounds and many others.

Q: Does this require WiFi connection, or be used without (in car instead of Bluetoot)?

It’s a WiFi streamer - mine is logged into to my existing WiFi network so I can stream from a device in any room in the house or use it a part of a multi- room network. I believe it can instead be set to act as a WiFi hotspot so you would connect your source to the streamer’s WiFi network directly. In this case it would work in the car but you’d still be streaming to WiFi.

Q: Can i stream google play music to this device

Didn't know Google Play music still existed! I use it for Spotify and DLNA from a NAS for which it is perfectly suited.

Q: Can this be added into my google home setup for multi room audio? I.e. is it a replacement for chromecast audio?

I don't think it will work as a direct replacement for Chromecast Audio. I use it as a dlna streamer and even then the multi-room element is the least reliable function. When I use a google cast compatible player on my phone the audiocast M5 isn't available as a device to cast to.
