In the shop and on Samonsite website this has backpack straps? some reviews also say it is whilst some say it’s not... anyone help clear this up?

You can buy a version that has backpack straps or you can buy a version without backpack straps. They have different product code numbers. The one with straps is recommended to retail for slightly more. There is a slight difference with the stated dimensions (affecting which airline cabins accept it), internal volume and overall weight of the bags. On top of having straps, the backpack version also has wheel covers.

there is a side pocket on front .  Zip dimensions about 9inches or 23cm in length, but its a deeep pocket the spans the entire front of suitcase flap....so not really.  the size to slot in a laptop id say
