Works well if you fit it properly; ignore the seller's pics and read this
This gate spring works really well, but there are a few things to be aware of: 1. The spring doesn't work by bending, it working by twisting. So it needs to be almost vertical (see my picture) so that it twists as the gate opens. The pictures the seller suppliers show the wrong setup (the spring is at the wrong angle), and I think they've just photo-shopped a spring onto stock images. 2. You need to pre-tension the spring, i.e. put a twist on it. Use the little metal bar supplied two twist one end, then put in a little metal stopper to stop the spring untwisting when you let go. Make sure you twist it in the right direction; it took me a couple of goes to get it right. I found I needed to put quite a lot of tension on for it to be effective. I tensioned (twisted) the spring with the gate closed - the spring needs to be still trying to unwind when the gate is almost closed otherwise your open gate will swing part of the way but not close properly. Some seller's reviews mention the little metal stoppers falling out because they don't fit tightly. I found that they didn't need to fit tightly - if the spring is tensioned properly the spring is trying to untwist all the time and metal stopper is forced against the bracket, locking it in place (again, see my pic) . i.e. the stopper doesn't need to tight fitting.

It works, but there is a but!
Having looked online for ideas to keep my side gate closed during building work without closing it completely, I settled for a spring closer. This fitted the bill, and was reasonably priced. I installed it relatively quickly, and it works. The tension takes some adjusting to get right, it either doesn't quite close, or it slams the gate quite violently, but most importantly, it does the job I bought it for. So what is the 'but'? Well, the spring works, but, the small metal pegs that are supplied to hold the spring under tension are completely useless. They are too small for the holes in the end of the spring on one end, and too big on the other. Placing the smaller ends into the holes would seem logical, and they just about stay in position for a few brief seconds, until you pull the gate open to test the operation. The increase in tension is too much, firing the pins through the air to land who knows where? I have substituted the pins for a couple of substantial screws, which give me a lot more confidence as they actually need to be screwed into the holes, and hold the tension well. Just for information, the fixings supplied to fix the spring to the gate and the gatepost are not standard screws, so I just replaced them with some standard (and bigger) screws. Overall, for the price, this is good value, just a little bit of a pain that the pins don't fit properly.

Screws and tensioner are all included.
Pleased with the item, it closes the gate really well. It has all you need to fit it apart from screwdriver but does include the tensioner for the spring. Recommend highly.

Poor quality item
Very poor quality, one of the pegs was half the size of the other and wouldn't lock in place, had to bodge with a screw then purchase a new one from Screwfix for half the price. Miles better quality

Strong and good value
I bought a pair of these as I wanted a strong gate closer. They are good quality and fixing was easy. Their strength can be gauged by the fact that I found a single closer quite sufficient for wooden gate.

Not very strong
This product does a reasonable job, but I put it on a fairly heavy gate and it's not quite strong enough. I added a second spring, although a very similar product is available with a larger and stronger spring which might have been better. It was easy enough to fit. The screws started to rust quite quickly so I used galvanised screws for the second spring. The inserts have a tendency to pop out when the spring is tensioned, but a tap with a hammer seated them securely enough to stay in place.

Fait ce qu'on lui demande. Les goupilles de blocage sont trop petites et ne tiennent pas bien. J'ai préféré repercer les axes et mettre des vis à la place, ainsi ça fonctionne très bien.
