Modern Calligraphy: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started in Script Calligraphy

I have a few calligraphy books and this one is different from the others in that the section on how to form your lettering is fairly short, but there are lots of lovely ideas and instructions for ways to use your calligraphy skills and combine them with other techniques, watercolour in particular. There are lots of tips on how to use a range of materials and the book combines inspiration with practical advice.

Well designed book with projects. Clear and concise. Great for beginners too.

Great book for beginners and for people with experience. There is plenty of variations to try and the tips and theory are very clear and useful. So far it is my favorite about modern calligraphy, I highly recommend it.

Great book

This has rekindled my desire to be a calligrapher. As a left hander I hade near given up with broad nib work. Still persevering with broad nibs but this book showed me there is hope with using pointed pen which still makes eye catching modern calligraphic art.

One of the great resources I have to hand when learning or developing my calligraphy technique. Arrived in good time and is a great resource. Lots of valuable information. Although it's an American book and the prices quoted are in US$, the techniques and information within are relevant to all.

This book is all you need as a beginner calligrapher! The only thing it's lacking is practice sheets.

I like this book, it has a number of projects for your newfound skill and as I lack all imagination but long to be creative, this helps a lot.

Llegó muy pronto (en menos días de los que se indicaba que podría tardar). Aunque es de segunda mano, el estado es prácticamente perfecto. Estoy muy satisfecha con la compra y con el servicio. Es un manual de caligrafía bello, ameno y muy completo. Tiene una estética muy cuidada, con fotografías preciosas. Los contenidos van desde descripciones detalladas de materiales y sus usos, explicaciones de los trazados, abecedarios... e incluso tiene una parte en la que muestra paso a paso diferentes proyectos (tarjetas, sobres, un árbol genealógico...), que aportan ideas prácticas y muy bonitas.

Je me suis fiée aux avis des internautes pour choisir ce livre et je ne suis vraiment pas déçue, il est génial !! Je n'aurais peut-être pas choisi celui-ci si je n'avais pas lu les avis, d'autres livres étant peut-être plus attractifs au niveau de la présentation, mais je pense que ce livre est le plus complet et le plus détaillé, même si mon avis est totalement subjectif puisque c'est le seul livre que j'ai lu sur la calligraphie (cela dit, aux vues des avis et des présentations, je pense que certains autres livres sont plus de la "poudre aux yeux" que de véritables bibles sur la calligraphie). Le livre Modern Calligraphy se compose de 5 parties super détaillées; j'en suis à la deuxième et je suis en train de faire les exercices pour apprendre à faire les traits et les lettres (je n'ai pas encore commencé les phrases) et la première partie était tout aussi intéressante et m'a permis de choisir le bon matériel et de comprendre pourquoi tel papier est mieux que tel autre ou comment choisir mes plumes à bouts pointus... En revanche, ce livre est en anglais et il faut donc trouver les bons termes en français avant d'acheter le matériel, mais ce n'est pas très compliqué. Bref, ce livre est une bible de la calligraphie et je le recommande à tous ceux qui s'y intéressent, débutants ou non. Pour ma part, je suis totalement débutante et ce livre me guide pas-à-pas. Il est génial et on voit que Molly Suber Thorpe est passionnée par son sujet.

Das Buch hält was es verspricht: es bietet eine gute Einführung in die aktuell so beliebte "Modernen Kalligraphie". Molly beginnt mit Feder- und Federhalter Erklärungen, verschiedenen Tinten und Papieren. Sie geht auf die korrekte Arm- und Handhaltung ein und führt den Leser über einfache Übungen zum Alphabet und später zu Wort- und Satzkonstruktion. Da es in der Modernen Kalligraphie weitaus freier zugeht als in der klassischen Kalligraphie, geht Molly auch darauf ein verschiedene Strokes und Buchstabenbilder auszuprobieren und zu kreieren. Im hinteren Teil macht sie Vorschläge für verschiedene DIY Projekte um das gelernte praktisch einzusetzen (Einladungen, Platzkarten, Stempel Design, etc ...) Alles in allem bin ich sehr zufrieden mit dem Buch und kann es vorbehaltlos weiterempfehlen.

I had been holding off for a long time in buying a book that focused on modern calligraphy, thinking I could find the same information online through blogs, Pinterest, etc. I was wrong. I caved and purchased the book, worried I would be disappointed in my purchase, but I wasn't! If I had only purchased the book sooner, I would have saved myself money on the wrong supplies I purchased from Micheal's (nibs, ink). The tips and tricks are fantastic and the font styles to follow are perfect for the look I wanted. I have been practicing and have been able to look like a pro when writing the addresses on our wedding invites! The book also includes several projects one can try that I would say are perfect for the DIY bride. I am really happy that I did buy the book and it is my reference for everything on modern calligraphy. If you are Canadian, purchase this book through Amazon.ca because Chapters was selling this book for almost double the price.
