Q: Are the handles metal-frame with a plastic coating, or pure plastic? Also, what's the blade length? (diff websites say 55mm, but this listing says 3")

The ARS shears you referenced have a blade length - the actual cutting blade - is 2 1/4 inches. The handle is not plastic coated, but a rubberized grip on a plastic handle. My hand is on the small side and these fit perfectly to my hand. An excellent shear with a long lasting cutting edge. Not for heavy duty landscape chores -rather floral, small shrubs and other garden plantings.

Q: Would these work for trimming my mule's mane?

I don't think so. A sharp scissor would work better. The softer weeds aren't cut as well as the stiffer parts of the plant.

Q: How are these for cutting up hand held clumps of weeds or grass. my ars vs8 pruner worked well until it went out of adjustment and started sticking.

I love this pruner. I use it for everything except the thickest stems or branches. I think it would work fine for cutting up clumps of weeds and grass.
