Design Your Own Crochet Projects: Magic Formulas for Creating Custom Scarves, Cowls, Hats, Socks, Mittens & Gloves

I’ve been wondering how you come up with patterns that have more complicated stitches than just repeating the basic stitches like double crochet and this book explains that and so much more. It has detailed formulas you fill out to find how to create exactly what you want to make. There are formulas and patterns for scarves, cowls, hats, mittens & gloves, and socks & slippers. She gives instructions for both cuff down socks and toe up socks. Same with brim up and top down hats. I think you can probably be as detailed as you want using her formulas or just use the basics like yardage guides for various sizes of cowls and figuring beginning chain lengths. There is also a small but very nice stitch dictionary. Her patterns are minimalist looking and quite lovely in the stitch patterns she used. I hope she goes on to write other formula books for items like triangle shawls, tank tops, cardigans etc. Highly recommended if you are wanting to design your own patterns.

Making gloves is hard. This gives you the formulas but it doesn’t really tell you how to apply them to make your own. Very challenging if you are not versed in actually making a pattern to fit an exact measurement.

This is a must have for your crochet book library. I am always forgetting formulas, can't remember where I saw them etc. etc. but with this book everything I need is in one spot. Excellent reference for all crocheters of all levels.

This book starts out slowly. It covers a lot about yarn, measure, swatches and the like. It was hard for me to get through this part. I found a lot of information here. Much I, knew the end result of not doing or doing wrong. But I found reasons for doing clarified. The explanations for designing patterns in book could be easily expanded to other projects.

I love designing my own patterns, but I was not confident when writing them down. This book is fab for teaching you how to do it. It has really changed the way I crochet as well as it makes me think about how I would describe it to someone else. Really great if you want to capture and save designs.

This is a book that I had been waiting for. I have been reading and following crochet patterns for a long time. This book not only had patterns, but it had formulas that showed me how to create my own patterns. Game changer!!!

I purchased the kindle version and removed a star because the links to the worksheets do not work (which was the reason I purchased this version)…I’m a little disappointed because I was looking forward to trying the web resources. In any case, the book itself seems well rounded and thoughtfully created. I appreciated the inclusion of a stitch dictionary and will continue to use this as a guide in my crochet design process.
