Biopic following the life and work of French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent (Pierre Niney). The film shows how the young designer cut his teeth at Dior in the 1950s before creating his own couture house with the help of his business partner and lover Pierre Bergé (Guillaume Gallienne). Although Laurent is now regarded as one of the greatest names in the industry, his personal life was full of great difficulties including struggles with mental illness and drug abuse. Review: Film - Excellent educational film Review: Pierre Niney's is perfect at Yves St Laurent - I loved this film. The film itself is beautifully produced, the direction just right, the balance of characters, biographical progress through St Laurent's life, the inclusion of all aspects of his character and life, is very well done, but the outstanding quality of the film is due to Pierre Niney's superb acting. He lives St Laurent and seems to capture the essence of this unusual and so-talented man with all his faults and weaknesses as well as genius and charisma. Highly recommended.

A beautiful gesture to a Genius
Owning a secondhand YSL jacket in stylish sky blue... yet knowing nothing of YSL himself - thought it time to remedy the situation and purchased this dvd. Personally, brushing aside some of the more bitchy reviews of this film, I found it well crafted & well acted - stylish like the clothes, it must have been fun.... !!! to make and is a credit to all concerned - so thank you to you all for helping preserve and share YSL's memory. Disappointing . Did not show hardly any thing of their life in Marrakech . Well acted , but just overly lacking .

The magic of one of the 20th century Icon Fashion designer ‘the incomparable YSL’ comes to life through Monsieur Niney!
It is a huge challenge to try re-create the life of the Fashion Icon Yves Saint Laurent. I think Monsieur Niney not only looks like the great designer as a young man but also have a lot of his mannerism down to a fine art. The behind scenes in the YSL atelier and all that goes on in putting on a couture show etc was all very well executed. it was kind to keep the scenario to the younger dynamic Yves - and not ‘maestro’s latter career - although a genius ‘with cloth’ and the unique artistic approach to his creations - many true Icon Cuts. As a design student we went to the Paris Couture shows in 1968 and was lucky to have entrance invitation for a large number of the shows, Dior, Givenchy, Balmain etc as in those days students were given access, although seated in the back row, but ‘being there’ was magic - including 3 of us went to the YSL Couture Show, breathless experience that have stayed all these years and one of the reason’s I wanted to recap his life. A small note to DVD distribution executives - please brake down the language and bureaucratic frontiers - any decent French Film should be published with optional English Subtitles and language options vice-versa!! I had to buy this YSL DVD in Amazone UK to have the English subtitles (as always DVD’s are cheaper in UK stunningly up to euros 20-40 in some cases compared with France!!) Many US releases for example come with French and other language options!!

Is this the reality or a titivated version of the truth?
The film charts the meteoric rise of the talented shy, introverted and gay Yves Saint Laurent and then his struggles to keep his creativity and to cope with his sexuality. Whether it is a truthful or a dramatic version of his life, I do not know. It gave me a perspective that I had not previously had but interestingly left me wondering whether or not I would still want to buy into the magic of the YSL label.

Don't bother!
It's truly depressing that something so simple should get it so wrong. I don't doubt the sincerity of the team associated with this film, but the heavy hand of Monsieur Berge plus ludicrous casting makes this just dull. Yves was a monster with mental illness, Pierre was a saint who stood by him.oh yeah? The women are dreadful, Zizi Jeanmaire, Betty Catroux and Loulou de la Falaise especially bear little resemblance the real women. The Karl and Jacques are equally oddly cast, and to be blunt most of the time the lead actor looks like Hamish Bowles not Yves Saint Laurent. Berge gets his revenge onpoor Yves' mother who I am sure was as tough as nails but it's unnecessary to dwell on it so much and the smallest details are wrong. The catwalk at the Intercontinental hotel was to my knowledge never so low, and the flowers surrounding the entrance are really mean, not huge and lavish as they were in real life. Wait until the other film appears on DVD and let's see what that's like. Meantime save your money.
