Q: I recently purchased this belt in med. I'm between 31-32" waist. It doesn't feel tight enough. Will size small fit?

Hey, If you measure 31 Inches around your navel, I would recommend to go with the small. The two ends of the belt will just meet (the belt itself is 31 inches in length), and the strap should fit perfectly around and not have any excess hanging off. The medium will work as well, but, I think you will find it to be a bit more cumbersome with the extra strap length compared to the small. Q: why is this belt better than a regular velcro one?

Even if you don't secure the Velcro on this one, the self-locking mechanism of this belt will keep it in place and will never go loose

Did I pay extra just to be able to put patches on my belt? Yes.Nice to able to customise your belt but not essential.The belt itself works well for me (Crossfit and Strength Training) I'm an average everyday athlete. Use it in classes and it's a brilliant bit of kit. Can get it sinched in and really helps with my brace.I use it with the locking system and without, depends how quick I need to get it off.Really happy with it.
