Insightful, encouraging and human
I bought this book after attending a 'men's retreat' which stirred my interest in finding out more about the masculine archetypes within all men. I approached it with scepticism, as I always tend to with 'touchy-feely' books. Often they promise a lot but halfway through you find that they are just products of the author's self-indulgence and have little real value. Not so with this book. I found a complicated subject clearly explained in layman's language that isn't patronizing, just clear, approachable and human. As the various archetypes and their 'shadow' selves were revealed to me I found areas of difficulty within my life becoming much clearer and could identify with both positive and negative aspects of all the archetypes and how they may impact upon my life. As soon as I finished the book I re-read it to clarify some of the points I had identified and am making in-roads towards trying to come to terms with these 'men inside me', hopefully to make friends and live amicably with them - I'm not naive enough to think that I may be able to change them or make them go away, but this book gives you hope that you can make a truce with some of the 'maggots' burrowing away at the psyche and live a more peaceful and wholesome existence. A valuable book for any man who wants to get closer to the 'real man' buried inside him.

Warrior Magician Lover King
This is a good book, certainly. The late Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette did a thorough job of explaining the cultural origins of our archetypes, and how they've manifested in loads of human societies through the ages. You can't fault their anthropology. And they're good on the psychodynamics and characteristics of each archetype. But when I read the newer book by Rod Boothroyd - Warrior Magician Lover King, A Guide to the Male Archetypes For the 21st Century - I regretted not getting Mr Boothroyd's book first. It's more about how the archetypes show up in the world in each one of us today. For example, Boothroyd describes how the archetypes play out in us, whether they are balanced, too weak, or too strong, and he also suggests what we can do to embody them all in a healthy, balanced way, which isn't something Moore and Gillette focus on very much. Both books are good, but if you only want to get one of them, then I think Mr Boothroyd's has a slight edge in practical terms, because it seems, at least to me, more relevant to most men in the world of today. And it's also very good for women who want to understand men (or the masculine energies in themselves) better. Now all we need is a similar book about women's archetypes and we'll all be able to understand ourselves better!

One of the most powerful books I've read as a Man
This should be your manual if you're interested in working on yourself through a Jungian/depth-psychology framework. I've included this in my '5 Books that have changed my life' because it has! It has great insights into the masculine psyche, the structure and archetypes that stand at its foundation. More importantly, it explains exactly what happens when the structure is twisted and the shadows emerge: how these influence the development of the personality. It's a masterwork that you'll have to study multiple times and apply what it shows.

Map to the mature masculine mindset.
It's a well written, easy to understand, interesting book, that is in most part oriented towards men, but offers something for women as well. Describes the origins and motives of certain types of behavior and different personality types. In short, it tries to give a "formula/pattern" for a healthy mindset, also describing the unhealthy ones. The concepts and the phrasing used to describe them, are balanced very well between technical psychology/psychotherapy, myth/fairytailes/literature and spirituality/self help, without becoming too much like any of those genres and thus is easy to read and yet full of intense information that is very captivating. I'm not a huge self-help fan, but i would recommend this book to everyone. Just try to lay the book down every once in a while and think about the concepts described within, without burning through the pages too fast.

Fondamentale testo per l'esplorazione degli archetipi maschili nella tradizione jungiana. Ha ormai la sua età ma rimane validissimo.

Shows how mature masculinity is a giving and positive energy, which needs to be striven for, in order to not remain in the immature/bipolar forms of masulinity, that is so often destructive and oppressive.

Es un buen libro, y es una buena reexploración de los arquetipos de un jungianos Pero se nota que tiene casi 35 años desde su primera publicación y algunas cosas se quedan algo anticuadas.

This book helps to understand very much about the masculine archetypes as well as to contact or develop them in order to mature men’s archetypes from boyhood pole to mature masculine pole.
