Nano skimmer with airpump technology !
I bought this skimmer last August for my Topfin 25 gallon bowfront tank. I was skeptical about the airflow design of Tunze Nano 9001 compared to the powerhead turbo /venturi systems that I have used before. There were no recent reviews except for a brief review on YouTube. So I took the risk of ordering this unit since Tunze is a well known product in the industry. Assembly: Upon assembly of this unit I was debating which position of the pump should I use, since there are 3 ways you can mount it to the body. I finally end up using the conventional way as stated in the manual. It kept me thinking as to how it actually works because its has this air inlet hose plugged to an impeller that has no motor attached to it? It took me sometime to attach it with the magnet because the air inlet hose keep floating and pushes off the body. I found out the best way is to put the collector cup while mounting with the magnet to the tank. Operation: When I first turned on the skimmer I saw some kind of compressed fine air coming out of the transparent cover. When I adjusted the air inlet that's when I knew it was already running, seeing the skimmate rise off the cup. It is an effective and quiet nano skimmer with air pump technology, without the use of a cumbersome air-wood ! I recommend this skimmer to any nano tank owners.

Ahhhhh. Thank you Tunze.
So superior to any other small skimmer. I have tried them all. Flushed a lot of money down the drain with others. This one is as close to perfect as I can imagine. Mainly, it actually removes skimmate!!! whoooo! No constant adjustments. I do have it in my rear baffled area with a constant water level. It would not work well if water level fluctuates. It has stopped working once due to my negligence of not cleaning as recommended and the airline getting clogged by a sponge. Clean it periodically and you will be fine. Unlike most, it is actually possible to take it apart and get it back together without much cussing or needing 4 hands. The main feature is that it is SILENT. We have the tank right by the couch, and this got a thumbs up from my husband who cannot tolerate rattles or weird noises.

Started strong, but some annoying points
I just installed this skimmer and I already really like it. It seems sturdy and well built. I've installed this in my shallow reef tank which is only 7 inches high, and it fits with no problems. I’ll be moving this into a new sump shortly, but I think I would still be happy with it living in the display tank, as it’s pretty thin and unobtrusive. Based on some other reviews I was worried that the magnet would be an issue. I've had no issues with the magnet holding the unit up or coming off. From other videos online, and the pictures in the manual, it looks like they've redesigned the magnet to be a bit more solid. I’m only giving this 4 stars at the moment, since I’m getting a fair amount of micro-bubbles. Initially I had setup the foamer with the surface skimmer extension. After seeing the micro bubbles I switched it back to the factory position with the inlet pointed into the removable cover on the bottom. That resulted in most of the bubbles getting trapped and pulled back into the skimmer. I’m assuming that’s why they deliver it in this configuration. I'm hoping once the unit is broken in, the micro bubbles will cease completely. As per the noise level, at first I left the black cover off of the silencer, which makes the skimmer very loud. So if you’re thinking this thing is obnoxiously loud, look for that little black cover. I’m not sure why it comes with it removed. With the black cover on the silencer, along with the top on the collection cup, this thing is super quiet. It’s perhaps a touch quieter than my mp10 pump, and is no problem having this in my living room. I’ll be updating this in a couple days once I see how the skimmate looks, and if the micro bubble issue persists. UPDATE: I'm actually now returning this skimmer, and not as happy with it as at the outset. My primary issues with it were a reduction in skimmate, as well as always having to adjust it up and down. Tuning this thing requires the water level be at a specific point, which seems fine, since I have a top off that maintains exact water level. However, feeding, amino acids or basically any slight change in the tank causes this skimmer to change its foam production rapidly, potentially overflowing the cup. In addition, dialing up or down the production requires moving the skimmer up and down in the tank, which is a huge pain. The dial that is supposed to provide control for the air flow really doesn't and is basically an all on or all off affair. So basically I ended up moving it up and down every day. My second major complaint is that after adding a sump with a large volume of new water, the skimming on this completely stopped. There was no foam head for nearly two weeks, and no skim mate production. Contacting their support online, they basically told me that with the large water change there were not enough organics in the water. Prior to that, I had already noticed a decrease in the skim mate production. So basically, this had pulled out all the stuff it could, and got to the point were the water was too clean for it to really function. I've since ordered a much larger, and actually less expensive skimmer, http://www.amazon.com/SCA-301-Gallon-Protein-Skimmer-Sump/dp/B00CML49CK , that clearly is able to pull skim mate even with my reduced levels of nutrients. The new skimmer began producing a nice foam head shortly after being added to the tank, whereas this wasn't foaming at all. So overall I think this would be a nice skimmer for a very small tank without room for anything else. But if you can fit a higher quality skimmer, and are looking for an ultra low nutrient system, look elsewhere.

Good skimmer
I have had this for a while now. I think it’s a good skimmer but I wish there was a few things that were better. I got this for my Red Sea Max 130 (34 gallon tank) this skimmer was recommended & apparently popular. I wish there was the ability to adjust the water hight in the neck of the skimmer. Basically the whole skimmer needs to be moved up or down in order to fine tune it which can be troublesome. Also I’m not sure if it’s just me but it’s not the quietest skimmer out there but does the job. I believe there are better skimmers out there but I don’t have much space in the back of my all in one.

AMAZING Skimmer for nano tanks
Ordered this skimmer after struggling with the fluval mini protein skimmer. It broke in super quick and is giving me a beautiful brown sludge on the first day. setup is super easy there and tuning is intuitive. I cannot even hear it from across the room. not producing any micro bubbles either. It is a bit pricy but work it in my opinion, especially if you have a larger bio load or like to feed heavy. Edit: After having this skimmer for a month, The only complaint I have is the large amount of micro bubbles it makes. luckily its easy to solve. I just replaced the blue sponge with filter floss and they are gone!

DONT BUY
I had this in my tank for a month and it didn't produce any film, bubbles, skim at all. The impeller worked, bubbles were made, but nothing in the sort of protein skimming. I sent a request to return, but the seller wanted me to talk to the producer. DO NOT BUY, they will not make return easy if it isn't working, I am now stuck with a non-operating piece of $150 plastic. NOT impressed.

I brought this item through Amazon AU, it arrived today and I plugged it in using an adapter after 5 minutes of use it stopped working. Little did I know this product isn't rated for the Australian power as its higher than the USA power. If I had of known I wouldn't have wasted $220 on it!

Great skimmer. Not even a week yet and it’s almost broken in. Skimmate is a little light but already getting thicker by the day. The model I received has the silencer attached to a round dial between the magnet on the outside of the tank. Very easy to adjust the airflow to the skimmer. I had a qq1 magus before this and the tunze is a much better/easier unit. The tunze primes it self as the pump is inside the tank. The qq1 has to be primed every time because its pump is outside, and eventually quit working only after 2 years. It wouldn’t prime anymore. For the tunze, just set it and plug it in with no fuss. So easy. Also all black and small form factor helps it blend in and not take up much space. I currently have this on a 25 gallon rimless and it’s working great
