Worked on my XPS13 9360 running on Linux Ubuntu 17.04
Moving away from Apple laptops I was worried that wouldn't be able to continue using my Apple thunderbolt display 27 inch screen. This device worked on my XPS13 9360 running on Linux Ubuntu 17.04. I was able to drive my Apple thunderbolt display 27 inch screen (and integrated audio in it) as a second display. Worked first time, no driver needed, no problem (Linux rocks...). Only caveat was that I was not able to use the USB or the network adaptor at the back of the screen. It seems that the thunderbolt adaptor sees the display as an HDMI device only rather than as a docking station (which is should normally be with a Mac). However it was my main goal to be able to reuse this unusual screen which does not have standard connectors like HDMI or Display Port, etc... This Startech adaptor meant I didn't have had to sell my Apple thunderbolt display 27 inch screen.

Windows to Apple Display doesn’t work
It states that it would work for a dell > Apple Thunderbolt Display, but unfortunately not. Tried to get my work’s Dell Latitude 5440 laptop to work but didn’t do a thing. Nothing worked. Even got IT to enable a few special thunderbolt settings in the BIOS, that didn’t work.

Attached cable is what spoils it
This adapter works perfectly. I use it to connect my Thunderbolt 3 laptop to my Caldigit TS2 docking station. The main problem it has is the "embedded" USB-C cable. It is very short and therefore fiorces you to keep the device next to the laptop. This is not always practical. For example, if you have a laptop stand on your desk, or even a laptop arm to place your laptop, the adapter will generally hang from the laptop in the air, applying tension to the wire. I have a laptop arm which is the worst as the laptop is quite high from the desk. I used double-sided tape to attach the device under the tray of the arm and run my TB2 cable from the device through the arm down to the docking station. Even so, doing a 180 turn with the cable to insert into the laptop is very tight and I think will eventually wear the cable out. I would prefer it if I could stick (with double-sided tape) the adapter on my docking station instead, but this is not possible due to the length of the attached cable. A much better design would've been if they simply had two female ports (TB3 and TB2) so you can run your own TB3 and TB2 cables, of whatever length you need. This would've been much more versatile and reduced the cost of the device.

My second time buying!
My last one lasted about 6-7 years since 2017. I've not ever dropped it or anything and it still failed me gradually... i think it should've lasted longer but it's been some good long years so it's fine... my new one works perfectly. To be honest the price is quite high too but I haven't come across anything better so I can't complain. Overall it is a great thunderbolt adapter

The sound is also coming from the Apple Display which is much better than the inbuilt speakers in my laptop
I got a new Windows Laptop (Dell Latitude 7480) which has a USB-C connection on it. I used the StarTech adapter to use my Apple Thunderbolt display with the Dell laptop. I plugged the adapter in the laptop and the Apple Display fired up instantly, no setup required. I can now use my Apple Thunderbolt Display using the normal windows option such as duplicating/extending my laptop screen. The sound is also coming from the Apple Display which is much better than the inbuilt speakers in my laptop, and I can switch between using my laptop webcam or the webcam inbuilt in the Apple Display. So overall, everything I wanted, very pleased

Won't work with TB2 hard drive
Doesn't work at all. Bought to use my old TB2 Lacie External drive with new mac and it won't read at all. Had to fork out the extra for an apple one instead. For now I have to make do with a usb3 to Micro B 116mbps connection. Don't waste your time with this Chinese crap.

Consigliato. Giancarlo.

I have a Dell XPS laptop purchased in 2017 and an Apple Thunderbolt Display purchased in 2014. I wanted to connect the Dell (Thunderbolt 3) to the Diisplay (Thunderbolt 2). So, I bought the Apple TB3-TB2 adapter. And this worked for getting the single display to function with the Dell. Then I added a Dell Thunderbolt docking station, the TB16, to the mix. The Laptop to the Docking station via Thunderbolt 3, and the Docking station to the display via the Apple adapter. The display no longer worked. I think the problem is related to the problem people have when trying to daisychain multiple displays using the Apple adapter. The Display doesn't recognize that it is supposed to wake up, and becomes useless. So, I bought the Star Tech adaptor and started using it instead of the Apple adapter. Display started working again right away. No issues. (Remember though that you need the latest firmware on your system.)
