I do not recall having the problem you describe, mostly I use bluetooth earplugs. For most of the Jobs I do like trimming the hedges and cutting the grass, shears and headphone cables are a bad mixture speaking from experience. The port in the cover is big enough to accommodate the casing of the earphone plug. I think this answers your question. Good Luck
