is it compatible with the new 13 "macbook pro retina display? (Jan 2015)

I just got this, and it works with the Early 2015 model as well.

Can I save runnable programs such as Word, Excel in the the memory given by the card or just photos and document files?

Some runnable programs can be saved, haven't tried it with Microsoft office but it should work, the only issue is if your computer goes to sleep or if you log off your computer and you leave the program open, this will temporary disconnect the jet drive so when you log back it or " wake you computer up" it will give an error and say the drive is not found and you might lose some files if you don't save. You need to exit the application fully each time you stop using it.

Will time machine automatically back up this disk as well? (time machine backups being on a separate, external hd)

Yes, it will. You can include or exclude this disk from backup in Time Machine preferences.

Does it work for a 2012 MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro 2012, retina with flash drive. It works with some potential minor problems when the computer goes to sleep that Transcend has free software to fix. It is good to store documents/music on, but, by its nature, is too slow to store the system etc. on it. It is not a removable drive because it is relatively fragile. You put it in and leave there.
