Just a top - it is pricey but fantastic quality and washes beautifully

Definitely - but remember that it's just a base layer! I wore a similar one in Finland during winter several years ago and Merino wool does the job.

Q: Is this merino wool thick and itchy? I want to be able to use this for when I go skiing but dont want to be overheating and scratching all day.

It is not. It's really smooth and nice -- I hate the standard "itchy" wool stuff, but love this one -- I'm wearing this daily as a base layer when I'm on motorbike, basically all year round (except for the odd week with 30+ temperatures, when I switch for short-sleeved merino t-shirt - all under my thick jacket) -- it's soft, wicks the sweat perfectly and is all but "hot". Highly recommended for any activity that would benefit from thermal regulation and may cause sweating.

Q: What size would I need for my husband who wears 34” waist trousers?

You really need his chest size as this is a long sleeved top... BUT I wear 36-38" trousers and XXL was great for me so a smaller size is probably needed for your husband. The size guide link next to the size selection widget at the top of the product page is a good guide. Lovely bit of kit for anyone working or exercising outdoors over winter though, second winter running with Brass Monkeys merino isnt quite here yet but its not far off!
